Talmar The Artist

Fort Weyr - Living Caverns
This cavern, having been created by bubbles in the volcanic flow of this extinct volcano, has a breathtaking ceiling — a vast dome that arches high above the heads of the weyrfolk that scurry around beneath it. A hollow echo can be heard from loud enough noises, and the chatterings of various firelizards are consequently multiplied into a chaotic babble. All in all, the living cavern is a loud place.
Tables are scattered around the room, apparently in no particular order. Over to one side near the kitchens, two medium sized serving tables are constantly spread with snacks, klah, and other goodies. The tables look worn, yet perfectly fitted to the atmosphere of the caverns. In the 'corners' of the cavern, smaller two and four place tables are set up for more private talks or just a less chaotic atmosphere in which to eat.

Talmar is sitting at a table, a pile of clay in front of him that he is carefully shaping. Looks like he's making some kind of a sculpture. He keeps looking up, at the plate of food resting near the clay, then back to the clay. The clay begins to take on the shape of the plate of food. Not the most interesting of subjects, but remains still for longer than a firelizard or a person.

J'xmi comes walking in, yawning a little bit sleepily. He pauses, not interrupting Talmar's concentration yet, observing for now as he tilts his head, eyes sharp.

Talmar looks to the plate of food, then back to the clay, hands moving all the while. He glances up suddenly at a yawn, and flushes slightly. "I, uh… I'm practicing." he says, truthfully enough. Seems he doesn't really think that a plate of food is a suitable subject for pottery, even if he is using it as such.

"Practice makes perfect." the rider states, reaching to drag an armed chair over and take a seat, his form filling the chair completely. "It's very good though. Id dint' mean to interrupt. Though you should eat before it gets cold…

Talmar shakes his head, "No, sir. You didn't interrupt." he says, simply. "See?" and he lifts his hands away now, and it looks more or less like the plate of food. His 'masterpiece' revealed, Talmar now washes his hands briefly in the bucket of water he always seems to have when working with clay - to keep the clay from drying out - and pulls the actual plate of food closer, beginning to eat. "Was Master Jopier able to make that pros … pros-thingy for your dragon?" He means prosthetic.

J'xmi grunts "I havent' been able to see him yet. Been builsy." he admits. "How are you doing on the jars?" he inquires curiously.

Talmar grins up at J'xmi, "I just got the last one back from the cooker today, they're all waterproofed and cooked now." he says, nodding. "I can go get them now, if you want, sir?" he asks, but he doesn't get up just yet, instead stuffing his face with food.

J'xmi looks quite pleased "Excellent! " he states and then waves "no. Eat now. Work later." he notes, the rotund rider showing off how that theory works for him. He glances down to one edge of the chair, then the other, and blinks "Yes. Let's sit for a while."

Talmar grins, and nods. "The stew today is good. The meatrolls are okay, too." he comments, between mouthfuls of both. He looks to his plate, then to the clay replica, and giggles. "Doesn't look so much the same anymore, does it?" he says.

A rumbling chuckle comes from the bronze rider as he smiles "Aye, it does not. Though I'd tell you off if you tired to eat the look alike. Will it be cooked too?" he asks curiously, leaning forwards a little in the chair, which groans in protest.

Talmar glances at the fake plate, then laughs. "Cook the food? I don't think so, it's just a practice thing." he says, though he does laugh again over it. "I do lots of these little things. I use my own marks to buy the clay, so I can do what I like with it." he adds, proud that he is earning enough marks to keep his hobby alive.

"A wise investment. That is a dinner to be proud of." he compliments, and then folds his arms across his stomach "Search is coming up soon, but i'm sure I can find time for Bysoth to… pose for you. He's puzzled why one would want a smaller version of him."

Talmar grins up at J'xmi then, happily. "Oh, really? Oh wow, I've never made a clay dragon before. I've made some clay firelizards, but never a dragon." well, it was part of the deal, wasn't it? Perhaps Talmar had forgotten, or perhaps he's just excited now. "That should be fun."

J'xmi chuckles "Well, save for size I dont think they look much different" he admits, looking at Talmar curiously "Aye, very much fun. Hopefully you wont try to make a full sized Bysoth."

Talmar giggles, and shakes his head. "Of course I wouldn't do it full sized… But dragons are different to firelizards. Firelizards don't always understand about posing and stuff. They get distracted, and wander off." he points out.

J'xmi hmms and ahhs "Good point. They're rather simpleminded. I dont very much like them. So you hada pose in mind for my Bysoth?"

Talmar frowns in thought, then shrugs. "Well, not really. Just … Bysoth." he says, finally. "I don't usually pose stuff, but I do like stuff to stay still while I'm making the clay things." he shrugs.

J'xmi hmmms ponderously "WEll, Bysoth is good at staying still. He enjoys sunning greatly." he concludes and shifts uncomfortably, the entire chair moving.

Talmar nods, and grins. "Staying still is perfect." he says, with enthusiasm. "Firelizards never seem to sit still for me, which makes it really hard to make firelizards from clay."

J'xmi laughs softly "I think if they are young they can after they've been fed, but still not very well." he agrees, nodding heartily.

Talmar nods. "I've never had the chance to do a young one. I have to try that some time." he says, filing it away in the 'to do' part of his brain.

J'xmi shifts again, fidgeting in the chair and he nods "Aye… I think i'll sit here for a while. I will go to pick up the pots later okay?"

Talmar nods, and gets up. "I'm going to go check on a few things I've got cooking. I'll see you when you come to get the pots, sir." he says, then heads for the lower caverns.
