Where Caverns, Xanadu Weyr

Xanadu Weyr - Caverns
A massive cavern in its own right, this one has been skillfully adapted for human habitation. The high ceilings have been painted a light, soft ivory, as have walls hung with numerous tapestries that provide brilliant color and insulation from the stone. The floor has been left in its natural state, pale pink granite speckled through with glittering mica and dark flecks of basalt. The stone is carefully leveled but kept sufficiently rough to avoid slips.
The cavern itself is loosely divided into areas, each one set up to be suitable for some segment of the Weyr's population. The most frequently occupied area is the one near the Kitchens, where tables of varying sizes provide a place to sit down and eat or chat and a buffet of consumables is almost always kept stocked. It's plain that on most days, this area wouldn't accommodate anywhere near the full population of the Weyr, instead feeding people in shifts as they come off duty. On occasions when a formal meal is laid out, tables are borrowed from all the other areas.
There's also a big fireplace set into the western wall, several comfortable chairs nearby providing haunts for elderly residents or riders who like a good view of all that happens. Rugs cover the floor in strategic spots, all of them abstract or geometric in design and most in the softly neutral colors of undyed wool.
Exits lead off in all directions, the largest an archway to the northeast that leads outside. Near it there's an alcove with hooks for coats and shelves for muddy boots. A tunnel to the east goes to the infirmary, and a set of stairs just a little south of that lead up to the offices and administration area. To the south, a long and sloping tunnel leads down to the hot springs. The kitchen is off to the southwest, while the residents' quarters are reached by tunnels going west, deeper into the cliff.

Summer. Sweet, blissful southern heat! Syn is loving it - her canine companion, mayyybe not so much. He's young, judging by roly-poly puppy fat, but he's big and heavily furred and not entirely understanding of how he was running through the cold and snow this morning and now he's panting like crazy to cool down. "There you go, Coop, drink up. Don't look at me like that, with your big dumb eyes and your big dumb face. You're as bad as your dad." A tiny blonde greenrider stoops to offer the dog a bowl of water before dropping heavily to sit at a nearby table, watching the fluffy mutt lap from the bowl with gusto and more than a little spillage. "You're a hot mess, do you know that?" Thumpthumpthump goes a tail and Syn leans to ruffle his ears before glancing around, perhaps looking for a familiar face, or perhaps just looking, period. People-watching's an awful fun hobby after all!

Jaelynn rather likes the warm weather, much better then having to bundle up and hide from the cold weather in her book. Still that means other crazy things that dragons of all ages can get into which is keeping this dragonhealer a bit busy. She is wandering her way into the cavern, a large book tucked under a arm while a blue lizard is settling onto her shoulder and nipping out at the book as if it was some evil thing. "Honestly.. I need to finsh reading it don't tear it apart. I'm rather certain Runkle doesn't want another book returned with your bite marks in it." Robin does not seem to care, the blue is gawning on a edge of the book. Oh hey, fuzzy canine at three oclock! Jaelynn smiles and turns heading over to Syn and said canine with a wave seen. "Hello… Ah may I pet your canine?" Might as well ask first right? Robin looks on from his chewing, still not impressed.

Syn catches that wave and returns it with a wiggly-waggle of fingers, blue eyes lighting up with mirth when Jaelyn angles their way. "'Course you can, at your own risk," the diminutive woman chirps, gesturing with one hand to give her the go-ahead. "He's a sweetheart, but he's got the drooliest face I ever saw." She's… not wrong. It's maybe not the drooliest face, but he's certainly made a mess of his muzzle in the water so… mind the splash zone! "That's Coop, and I'm Syn. And who's this li'l guy?" The flit she means, whom she coos at with a wiggle of finger. "I don't think that's meant for you, fella." The greenie's head tips, and then tips further, as though trying to read the book's title. "Bit've light reading, yeah?"

Jaelynn looks a bit amused and smiles while setting the book down far out of drool and water range, which only proves to make Robin pout. The little lizard shifts and perches more on his person's shoulder crooning right back to Syn. As for Jae she chuckles softly an offers a smile. "Oh that's alright. I don't mind some drool." She'll crouch down and wiggles her fingers over at Coop. "Ello Coop, like the water do you?" Jaelynn looks back to Syn and her smile is seen once more before she nods. "Nice to meet you both. I'm Jaelynn and this is Robin. Yep.. Got an exam coming up so just refressing some things." Because why not? As for the book it is 'Advanced Dragonhealing Vol.', the number is missing, perhaps Robin has chewed it off.

Poor Robin! Syn didn't mean to deprive you of your snack, honest! Though… considering the state of the book, it's probably for the best? "That's what you say now," the greenrider drawls after she's done making cute faces at the little blue flit, eyes glittering with fey amusement because Cooper says 'aroo?' and hefts himself to his feet, dragging at least one paw right through the water without a care given as he pads over to get all up in Jaelynn's business. Doggy nose! Doggy paws! Doggy tongue! Doggy enthusiasm, all for the low-low price of sacrificing that shirt you thought you were gonna wear today to the Gods of Slobber. Syn laughs and tries to catch at the dog's vivid green collar to pull him back with a giggling, "Aw, c'mon, buddy, down. You're getting way too big for this! Sit!" That command he at least answers, panting spiritedly before offering a paw. "Phew. Anyways. Test, you say?" A glance back at the book, squinted at before she offers a crooked grin. "Ah, a dragonhealer. What grade?"

Jaelynn Robin will have to get over it, though at the approaching large and most likely wet canine the blue let's out a hiss and is soon fluttering off and lands on the book. He is so totally guarding it don't you know? Jaelynn's eyes widen at the canine and a slight ah escapes her before she is soon laughing and holding her hands trying to keep the 'attacking' canine off of her. "Wait..!" Not that it works as said dragonhealer is sent spawling nearly upon the floor, at least she is sitting? Her shirt is wet and is that slobber in her hair? Rather certain, though she is at least laughing. "His fine, really." Jaelynn offers while attemping to rub her hands off on her shorts. "Just some drool, I'll take that over other things that have came flying towards me." An /hitting/ her many times thank you. Jaelynn smiles and nods. "Yep, grade two, the exam is part of the process to get to grade three."

Syn sees you protecting that book, Robin, and she thanks you for your service - literally, the woman points a stoic look the flit's way and salutes his efforts. Good luck, young flit - you're doing Faranth's work. Her head tilts back Jaelynn's way with a crooked smirk, stepping past entirely too much fluffy mutt to offer the dragonhealer a hand up. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure he still thinks he's this big," a pinch of her fingers close together, "even though he's not. Makes me nervous for what he'll be like when he's grown, but that's his daddy's problem," she adds with a dramatic widening of her eyes and a terrible grin. "I can only imagine the stuff you've seen, though. My father's a grade five outta Ista, and man, the stories he has…" She makes a mind-blown gesture near her head. "Always seemed like it was more interesting from before he ever impressed, too. But now I'm curious. Tell me your grossest story? I'll trade you." Even Cooper looks interested, head tilting at a crooked doggy angle with a whine.

Robin shall do his best and will guard this here book with his life just wait and SEE! Or he will until something bigger comes after him then perhaps flee in fear. Either way it wl be amusing. Jaelynn is busy brushing herself off and just stays on the ground crossing her legs because it it just easier. "Most large animals think that. Had a few dragons that attempt to get in my lap… Doesn't work well when they are a bronze by the way." A curious look is sent back to Coop. "How much bigger is he going to get?" She isn't to certain about canines and sizes, other then this ones is already big! "My father teaches over at Ista, well I think he does anymore." She lightly taps her chin in thought as her mind had wandered a moment there before she looks back to Syn at the talk of a story. "Oh really?" This makes her grin. "Your on, have you ever heard or seen hide borer's?"

Syn believes in you, Robin! You can do the thing! Syn, meanwhile, shrugs and flops to join Jaelynn on the ground, fending off renewed interest from Cooper with a push against his chest and a, "Nope, nope, nope, nope!" Eugh, dog kisses. Syn shrieks a little and makes a face and eventually wrestles the pup into her lap, and only then can she point an aggrieved look at Jaelynn. "Dragons? I bet that was fun. Surprised your legs aren't broke. As for him…" Belly scritches for Cooper! "Beastcrafters say big. Some kinda mountain breed." And this perversely delights her, as evidenced by a manic grin. "At least double this, and maybe then some." Oh good. "Ista's my home. Or. Well. It was. Fort's where I've been since I met my lifemate but." Shrug, and a cocky grin. "Yes, really." And yet, despite bravado, she gives the dragonhealer a warily interested look, as though she's almost afraid to ask, but too brave to back down now: "I haven't. What's a hide borer, then?"

Jaelynn nods slightly and seems a bit amused while watching Syn and Cooper and is grinning a touch. "Yeah, this one bronze, only gets his head on me. Then his rider is having to drag him off before I'm smoothered." It really is amusing, really. She is left ohing softly at the talk of the large fuzzy dog. "Does he take flying between well?" Seems she is curious. As for the rest she nods and looks a bit amused. "Firelizard's get them a lot, or at least sick or injured ones, especially wild ones. But given that our dragons are basicly like them there is a chance they can get them as well." Well isn't that just a lovely! She is going to explain everything now so beware! "It looks like what books say pin-point threadscore might have looked, or even festering lsions. They can have a dullness to the hide and even vomit." Ewww right? "We had a young blue that he and his rider was off in some jungle for a while show up at Ista with these little holes and some of them was getting larger across his hide. Nasty looking." She makes a face at the thought. "So we had to scrub him down with redwort and water, lots of water, numbweed because he would try and scratch them out, and then we worked on getting these parasite's out one by one in each lesion."

"Well, I suppose there's worse ways to go," Syn drawls, teeth bared in a grin. "My cousin's brown thinks wrestling is a viable means of settling arguments," she says, blue eyes flashing, "It goes exactly as well as you think it does." Meaning statistically speaking, the number of broken bones in Fort Weyr have gone up exponentially… "Coop? Yeah, he's an old pro at it now. We go everywhere, he and I, mostly to piss his owner off. One of these days he'll learn not to leave Coop where I can get 'im, but until then." Until then she'll be a little shit and do what she wants! "What about you? Much experience with between?" But for now it's story time, and Syn listens on with a rapt, horribly interested expression, one part fascinated, one part disgusted, all parts hanging on Jaelynn's every word until she gives a little shudder and makes a sickened gurgling noise. "That sounds damned awful, for you'n the dragon both. Faranth. How long and how many of you did that take? Didja have to get a queen to calm 'im? How big were they?" Welp, now you've done it Jaelynn, now she'll never shut up!

"Sure there is, starving, drowning, falling… Though that is the sudden stop not the falling bit." Jaelynn is just a ball of knowledge now isn't she? She glances to Cooper then back to Syn and ohs softly. "So his not your's?" Not that this seems to actually worry her, and she leans over to give the slobbery fuzzy huge dog a few chin scratches if able. "Yeah, been between plenty of times. Have to go to Ista for classes sometimes, mostly I get to stay here. Though I go wandering when I get a free day, even been off with a few friends recently ." She hums and glances back to Syn looking amused and soon grinning. "There not that big." She lifts a hand showing her fingers about two or three inches apart. "Though honestly having it crawling around in one's hide must feel horrible. We had to pull 'em out and then pack the wounds until they started to heal and then we was able to stitch them closed. Thankfully doesn't happen /that/ much anymore. Or at least not around Xanadu." A slight wave of her hand is seen. "It took a few hours, was four of us and the teacher. Wasn't fully covered either had a few patches over certain spots over the haunches and sides, tail base and wing base for some reason." The blue was not happy over that /at/ all.

"Runner tramplement, old blind wher snack, flaming booze down the wrong pipe," Syn agrees with a solemn hum, despite the ah, slightly more colorful ideas of how to die on her part. She tries to hide a smile but fails in the end, dimples digging deep into her cheeks as she says, "Nah, he's not. I found 'im and gave 'im to his owner, but technically he's not mine. I just like being a thorn in his master's side." Wink. Syn seems satisfied with the betweening answer, nodding thoughtfully before focusing in on further hide-borer conversation with that same awful fascination. "Faranth. That's truly somethin' else. I can't imagine what that poor dragon was feeling but I can't imagine it was anything good. I admire you doin' all that without a dragon to assist you besides. Can't be easy, going at it half-blind." Fingers tap at her temple, indicating it wasn't like Jaelynn could necessarily hold a normal conversation with her patients. "Well, we ain't got anything so terrifying as all that at Fort. The occasional frostbite, or snapped wing, or cave-in damage, or wildlife attacks. I don't suppose studying fertility cycles or touchin' all over eggs is much in your interests?" The question is… delicately put, Syn's expression twisted and amused, as though there's perhaps more to her inquiry than meets the eye. "If so, I think I might have an opportunity for you." Hint: it's white, and braided, and comes with a lot more work than studying flit-chewed books, and it's perched right there on Syn's open palm - a Fort candidate's knot for her consideration.

"Runner tramplement… Can I use that one?" Jaelynn questions with a slight laugh heard. What does she take notes? Perhaps. She pauses and lightly taps her chin. "Flaming booze down the wrong pipe seems rather painful to me. Did that actually happen?" As for Cooper she grins. "Your should braid his fur, maybe put some flowers in it even before giving him back." Because what else would she do? "It wasn't a good feeling from what I can tell. I've had a few dragons talk to me but this one was quiet, though could tell by the rider he was not pleased. Numbweed truely helped." At the cave-in part she ahs a touch and blinks. "That sounds awful…" Her hand lifts and she scratches slightly at the back of her neck on te question. "I won't lie, isn't high on my list of things. But… I haven't been allowed to go elsewhere, yet anyway. If I pass to Grade 3 Ill have more freedom I figure." Not to say she isn't good at her job, there is a certain gold on the sands that is always happy to see her after all so she must be doing something right. Her hand drops back to her lap and she glances to the knot slightly as she's caught sight of it and blinks at the offer that is before her. "Really?" She seems a bit surprized for one reason or another.

"But of course," Syn replies most graciously, laughter in her tone and mischief in her gaze for that chip-tapping follow-up question. "Well, I didn't die, but it was a near thing," the tiny rider drawls, leaning one cheek on her hand. "Tried to take the shot and breathe all at once. Things got a little toasty." And yet she lived to tell the tale despite what are clearly gruesome imaginings of all the ways it could've gone wrong. "The cave-in was certainly worse," Syn agrees of its awfulness, but makes no moves to expand upon that train of thought - mostly because she's focused on the knot in her hand and in smiling a wicked little smile right up until Jaelynn figures out she meant standing for the clutch rather than doing actual dragonhealer work. "Really," the greenrider confirms with a nod, twisting her fingers around the knot until it dangles in the air instead of resting in her hand. "I know, I know, it ain't nearly so glamorous as diggin' bugs out of a dragon's hide, but if I were the betting sort - and I am - I'd say this is going to be a very interesting clutch and a dragon could use someone like you that'd know how to care for them but." A shrug and a sharkish grin. "I suppose it's up to you if that's a bet worth takin'."

Jaelynn has to ponder the idea of trying to drink some flaming booze and breath at the same time. That is just downright awful thought! "So it really did happen, an to you no-less?" She is amused over this idea and chuckles softly. "Rather glad to see your still in one piece and not burned up like some weyrling using some firestone in a training class." Well it does happen. As for the knot it is eyed, perhaps she is expecting it to do something, like dance? "Interesting… Like how?" Is questioned with a curious look to Syn before she is left biting her lip a moment and soon slowly reaches out for said white knot. "Oh I'm sure I can find something to amuse myself instead of digging bugs out of a dragon's hide. I'lll also take that bet." She's stood a few times now, she doesn't have anything to loose at this point she feels. "Thank you Syn… Or well Rider Ma'am." She is at least polite.

"Sure did. That and a whole host of other undeniably terrible decisions made because I just can't say no to a dare," Syn murmurs with a wry twist of her lips, "but that's neither here nor there. You ever done a flaming shot? It was the first time I'd ever done one, and the guy said it'd be warm but I somehow wasn't ready for it, and funny thing about fire, it rather feeds off oxygen so I took a nice deep breath when I choked on it in surprise and-" Colorful hand gesture. "Shut me up for a little while at least." As for what's going to make this clutch interesting: "Well, I saw 'em get clutched for one and they're… eclectic. But also the clutchdaddy's rider's a good friend of mine, and that beast is about as feral as they come without actually bein' wild, so if they're anything like father, like eggs, well." Interesting. It'll be interesting. But the knot's taken, and Syn snatches her hand back before it can be returned because no take backsies, the tiny greenie already rolling to her feet, dislodging Cooper as she goes. "Don't thank me yet," the woman says in a droll tone as she gathers up the pup's leash, "but I am lookin' forwards to having you, Mistress Candidate." Two can play that game! "I've got a few things yet I have to take care of here, so why don't you see about explaining stuff to your ranking dragonhealer, and we'll meet in the clearing in a couple hours? Morizanth's the green that would be pretty if she weren't painted over in eye-searing green." Wink. "And hey, thank you, too. It'll be our pleasure to claim you as a candidate, ain't that right, Cooper-duper?" Syn snaps a jaunty little salute to the dragonhealer, and then she's off into the caverns to seek out the rest of her purpose for visiting the weyr.

"Never done a flamming shot before, drank this whiskey that tasted rather spicey before. Somthing like that maybe?" Jaelynn ponders mostly to herself before she glances to Syn and then Cooper as the two are on the move it seems and she is up offering a salute back and nods. "Alright. I'll see you well, three shortly then." Oh the head dragonhealer is just going to enjoy the heck outa this. She is leaving again and out of his hair? Possible! Robin is still clinging to the bok while it is picked up. "Come on Robin… Gotta go get someone's hopes up that might not come back again." Honestly she is a good student, good at hat she does but Runkle and company perhaps get a bit tired of her interesting ways of working with dragons at times.
